Mitt Romney likes the idea of being VP running mate for McCain
Mitt Romney said if he was asked he would accept the VP for John McCain. Romney came on strong and grew on many conservatives the weeks leading up to Super Tuesday. If we recall, Romney surprised everyone by dropping out of the race at the CPAC saying that any continuation would jeopardize the beginning of a general election — meaning John McCain’s chances of beating either Clinton or Obama. He called on conservatives to rally behind McCain. Of course, he endorsed McCain one week later.
Foxnews had the interview,
“I will do whatever Senator McCain asks for me to do in his campaign to help out in any way that I can,” Romney said. “I want to make sure that we have conservative leadership guiding our country. … Now is the time for us to come together and support his candidacy.”
The former Massachusetts governor said he’s sure McCain has a long list of “terrific people” to choose from as a running mate, but he wouldn’t reject an offer.
“I think any Republican leader in this country would be honored to be asked to serve as the vice presidential nominee, myself included. Of course, this is a nation which needs strong leadership, and if the nominee of our party asked you to serve with him, anyone would be honored to receive that call, and to accept it, of course,” Romney said on Hannity & Colmes. It was his first televised interview since dropping out of the presidential race.
Romney also gave insight into who would best match up against Senator McCain. Saying opposite what many are fearing, Romney said that McCain would match up better against Obama because it would be easier to draw out the differences and weaknesses of Obama, rather than Clinton. Romney added, that Obama is not the type of person to “stand up to Senator McCain.”
I don’t know…I think there is something to this story or to at least the connection between McCain and Romney. McCain has options, and good ones too, but right now Romney is still well remembered and his ideas and message are fresh in the minds of many conservatives. It would be hard to pass up a chance of picking Romney and absorbing his organization of support and finances.
