U.S. Senate battle in Louisiana taking shape as GOP hopes to gain seat
Two of the latest polls coming from Rasmussen Reports and Southern Media & Opinion Research poll has US Senator Mary Landrieu (D) leading State Treasurer John Kennedy (R). Both polls showed that Landrieu enjoyed over 50% support while Kennedy received roughly 39%.
Landrieu enjoys high approval ratings with voters. Landrieu benefited from her involvement and spearheading relief and recovery aid from Washington in response to hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Around 70 % had a favorable opinion of Senator Landrieu, which at this point proves that it will be unlikely she can be beat. So far, neither candidate has begun the process of traveling the state and campaigning.
The Republicans really want to take the U.S. Senate seat in Louisiana and feel it can be won. However, Kennedy doesn’t have the name recognition or the accomplishments that Landrieu has. Because of this, the GOP may decide to persuade other prominent Republicans to enter the race. The fact that Kennedy switched parties last year and prior to his conversion, ran for the U.S. Senate in 2004 as a populist Democrat. To many in the state, at least among Republicans, that makes him slightly unappealing.
The party primary election is scheduled for Sept. 6 and the general election is Nov. 4.
