Expelled, The Movie
I just returned home from the opening night viewing of Expelled, No Intelligence Allowed and decided that I needed to make this my first posting. I found some of the interviews shown between Ben Stein and an atheist, or more accurately “anti-GOD”, scientist to sound very similar to conversations between myself and one of my co-workers.
Much of the movie focused on the friction between Darwinism/evolution and intelligent design. It taught me more about Darwinism than I had ever learned in a public school education that preached evolution. Darwin’s theory of natural selection was applied by Hitler in Nazi Germany to justify the killings of the handicapped and racially inferior citizens in order to promote their superior race. This same philosophy of eugenics exists in the US with forced sterilization of those with undesirable genetics with the intent of ridding society of mental illness and impoverished people. This began in the US during the early 20th century and although has waned, still exists today in the form of an organization called Planned Parenthood.
But going beyond the arguments of evolution and intelligent design was the underlying issue of liberty, or the suppression of liberty within the scientific community and academia. I found this movie to be very compelling in urging people, scientists and students, to speak out against those who would silence views contrary to the establishment. Scientific theories should be exposed to scrutiny, question, and debate. This is what makes us stronger as a nation, a more innovative economy, and a more intelligent society.
