Jime Gilmore picked to run in Virginia Senate race
By all accounts it was a spirited convention for the GOP in Virginia but it was former Governor Jim Gilmore piked to run for the seat of retiring GOP Senator John Warner.
Gilmore received 50.3% of the vote over Bob Marshall, a member of the Virginia General Assembly and passionate supporter of pro-life ideals and traditional values. He came on strong towards the end and gather many supporters who identified with his social-conservative message. However, it looked as if many in the ‘establishment’ viewed Gilmore as the most electable for a state-wide race.
Gilmore will go on to face a very well funded opponent and popular ex-Governor Democrat Mark Warner in the fall. Looking at the current trends in Virginia, things are not looking too good for the GOP. The GOP lost the past two gubernatorial races and the 2006 Senate election.
