Thoughts on Obama’s Foreign Policy

Here’s how this all started I was really bored at work.  With nothing really keeping me busy I decided to torture myself and took a look at Mr. Obama’s website.  I was interested to see what his statement was on some foreign policy issues, due to the recent barbs between Obama and McCain.

View on Bring Our Troops Home:

“Obama will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. He will remove one to two combat brigades each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months. Obama will make it clear that we will not build any permanent bases in Iraq. He will keep some troops in Iraq to protect our embassy and diplomats; if al Qaeda attempts to build a base within Iraq, he will keep troops in Iraq or elsewhere in the region to carry out targeted strikes on al Qaeda.”

My take on the quote taken directly from his website; first and most glaring to me is that he is willing to allow al Qaeda to regroup and build-up strength again not trying to defeat or even deal with a group/enemy that is sworn to America’s down fall, only attacking our al Qaeda if they build a base.  He wants no permanent bases in Iraq, though he may (will) need them to carry out targeted strikes when al Qaeda regains a hold in Iraq, during his proposed presidency, about 18 months after he would take office.   That brings me to his removal of the troops from Iraq, he touts that he never voted for the war and have been against it from the beginning.  Well that’s easy to say when you’re not actually in the Senate at the time and you have the benefit of hindsight of knowing public opinion…right now.  This is just an example of how democrats seem to play public opinion, rather than make a decision on their morals and beliefs (if they have any worthwhile).

View on the Iranian Problem:

“Iran has sought nuclear weapons, supports militias inside Iraq and terror across the region, and its leaders threaten Israel and deny the Holocaust. But Obama believes that we have not exhausted our non-military options in confronting this threat; in many ways, we have yet to try them. That’s why Obama stood up to the Bush administration’s warnings of war, just like he stood up to the war in Iraq.”

He is willing to baby a nation that clearly and admittedly stated its hatred of a long time ally (Israel) and act as if none of this matters.  I wonder if our new allies are going to be Iran, North Korea and Syria.  Then maybe he will have us invading Israel.  Now I know this would never happen and is not that profound but his ignorance is stunning to me.  I think he is trying to look like President Nixon when he began relations with China.  That was a different time and a different enemy.  Iran does not and has not given any assumption that they would concede to Israel’s right to the most basic of human rights…to exist.

View on Talking to our Foes and Friends:

“Obama is willing to meet with the leaders of all nations, friend and foe. He will do the careful preparation necessary, but will signal that America is ready to come to the table, and that he is willing to lead. And if America is willing to come to the table, the world will be more willing to rally behind American leadership to deal with challenges like terrorism, and Iran and North Korea’s nuclear programs.”

Just another example of Obama not understanding that every nation, not just America, make their interests come first.  This preconception that the world will come rallying behind America is naïve, the only times when the world was behind America was when it was threatened with Fascists and Communism.  Unless he is willing to allow al Qaeda to grow to an unimaginable power, which would be a heinous crime against humanity, this theory of talking to anyone with no guarantees of actions or a philosophy change is adolescent thinking.
