Barr needs Ron Paul
Ron Paul left the race, but not entirely. He has plans to host his on convention which will no doubt bring out many fierce supporters of his brand of Republicanism and American politics. During the primaries he made critical comments against Republican candidates and officials but has never expressed opposition to the GOP or that he planned to leave it. However, Bob Barr has surfaced and has adopted much of Paul’s libertarian message and now seeks his support(ers). It would almost be impossible for Barr to make a substantial impact (only as third party candidates go and am in no way suggesting he would even come close to Perot’s success) with out Paul’s support or endorsement. There have been reports that Paul has warmed up to Barr in the recent weeks but has not said if he would support Barr for president as a Libertarian and Paul, of course, being an elected Republican.Despite polls to the contrary, some pundits see Georgia (Barr’s home state) as open and possibly winnable for Obama. However, it doesn’t appear that Barr has enough support to derail McCain’s overwhelming support in the state.Would a Paul endorsement give Barr the legitimacy he needs? Current polling shows Barr pulling in 6-8% of the vote in Georgia. Paul received 3.0% during the Georgia primary finishing at 4th. The top three, Huckabee, McCain, and Romney were separated by a little better than 1% with Huckabee winning with 33.9%.It’s hardly imaginable that Paul has enough support in the state to somehow give Barr double digit support, which is what he would need to make the state ‘open’ considering that McCain leads Obama anywhere from 10-16% in the state.
