More McCain and Romney: Romney’s position in the VP race looks obvious at this point
Mitt Romney said emphatically that he was a Republican and would pull for the Republicans this November. He said he would support McCain and do whatever it took to see to it that he won the White House. Then he went about doing it just as hard as he ran for the nomination. Now, in an even greater show of support of and Party solidarity, Romney has decided not to do any fundraising tours to help pay back the $40-plus million he loaned himself during the primaries. He would rather that money go towards McCain’s general election funds.
“Mitt Romney’s priority right now is raising money for other Republicans, including John McCain, and not trying to recoup the money he put into his own race,” Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said Friday.
Of course none of this has gone unnoticed by McCain and the Republican Party.
“In case you’ve been missing it, Mitt has been doing such a great job lately on my behalf,” McCain told donors at the Detroit Athletic Club. “I said only half in jest — he’s doing a better job for me than he did for himself.”
He noted that Romney has been appearing as a McCain surrogate on television interview shows, “not only defending, but standing up for the things that we believe in, are important to the future of the country.”

Romney is just too cool. He looks good and always sounds so smart. He’ll be a plus for McCain if he chooses him as his running mate. My only concern is some of the “flip-flop” issues that the Democrats will use against him. Not to mention, some of McCain’s own language towards Romney during the primary will also be dug up and used. I still think Romney has plenty of upside for the Republian ticket.

It’s wonderful that Romney has the right attitude here, but that’s not necessarily a reason to give him the VP slot. His numerous flip-flops will keep many conservatives from voting for a McCain-Romney ticket.
“…McCain campaign insiders say that while it’s true they have polled Romney on the bottom of the ticket, the data confirms that such a move would be a political disaster for the party.
‘Mitt tanks the ticket,’ says a McCain insider. ‘We lose fiscal conservatives. We lose social conservatives. We lose Catholics. We lose evangelicals. All the groups were spending time and money on bringing into the camp would be lost. He just doesn’t help us enough to do something like this, as much as Mitt might think we should. He doesn’t even win us Massachusetts.’”

Mitt will make Michigan winnable, though. I don’t think he is as disliked as the article states. Plus, the economy has moved to the #1 issue for Americans. Romney can easily be portrayed as a specialist in that area. There are some upsides to a Romny selection.
I’m not entirely disagreeing with you either. He does indeed bring a little baggage. The democrats will make his defend hisself on a host of issues that he has changed his positions on.
Great post by the way.

Romney would be the worst possible choice for McCain. Despite the fact that he spent millions he never really was able to connect with voters. Somehow he just did not seem real. When you look at his record in MA, it is apparent why. He has changed his positions on too many important issues just to fit the political climate at the time. The Republican establishment and big business are boldly pushing Romney for VP, but I hope that McCain will stick to his maverick principles, and avert this mistake - it would be fatal if he chooses Romney. Romney would not be good for the economy - he would ship more jobs abroard and choose corporate interests over those of the average American. He is anything but conservative on social issues and is in bed with the Log Cabin Republicans. No, Romney would doom McCain!
